To celebrate Children’s Week, we invited children living in Boroondara and neighbouring suburbs from years 1-6 to write a poem.
We asked them to tell us:
- How they safely stayed connected with their friends during lockdown
- What they missed most during lockdown, and
- Their reflections on 2021 more broadly
WINNER
Laila W, Ashburton Primary School (Grade 3)
When the virus came
we weren't the same.
It would have been nice to see my friends once or twice
instead of being on Zoom so soon.
I never chose this way
but it is a little bit ok.
We are getting to the end
and that's going to mean
we will see our friends.
And when we get there
we will shout,
'Hooray', there is no more COVID today'.

During lockdown, I put rocks down at the park,
which was stark,
three boys with their toys,
wearing crocks saw the frogs on logs near the dogs.
Now we want to go to school and swim in the pool.
I'm glad this year is near the end of lockdown.

Lockdown is bad,
And a little bit sad.
There is barely anything to do,
And we have lost connections with those we knew.
We are not allowed on the playgrounds,
They’re all out of bounds.
Being taught on our devices is just not fine,
Because now everything we do is just online.
Everywhere we know is bare,
No matter where we stare.
Lockdown is really tough,
I think we have all just had enough!
Getting out and about is really hard,
Which is why we just play in our backyard.
Lockdown is just not cool,
In fact it is really cruel!
Although to get this horrible virus away,
In our houses is where we must stay!
Now that vaccines are being handed out,
We are sure to beat this virus without a doubt!

You felt lonely contacting with a phone,
But you are not alone.
After a few days of home schooling,
You are running, jumping, and climbing.
You have a family member or even a friend that's stuck,
Me too,
Stuck in muck.
This moment is over everyone is happy.
